Carrier Modes

Carrier Modes are the stable, provider-agnostic way to choose behavior. You pick a mode; Carrier OS maps it to the best-suited configuration internally.

Available modes

  • general — everyday questions, writing, summarization, and general-purpose assistance. A fast, well-rounded default.
  • developer — coding, debugging, and technical problem-solving. Tuned with developer-oriented instructions for precise, code-first answers.
  • research — in-depth analysis, comparison, and long-form synthesis for research-style questions.

Why modes instead of models?

Modes decouple your integration from any specific provider or model version. When we tune or upgrade the model behind a mode, your code keeps working unchanged — and provider names are never exposed through the API.

Choosing a mode

Pass mode on each Chat request. Retrieve the machine-readable list any time from the Models API.
